
{"id":2,"date":"2017-06-04T17:49:54","date_gmt":"2017-06-04T17:49:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mrperez.expressions.syr.edu\/mexico\/?page_id=2"},"modified":"2018-10-12T18:45:12","modified_gmt":"2018-10-12T18:45:12","slug":"course","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/mrperez.expressions.syr.edu\/mexico\/course\/","title":{"rendered":"About Course"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>GLOBAL CITIES &amp; TRANSNATIONAL IDENTITIES (3 Credits, Undergraduate\/Graduate, EDU\/GEO 300, CFE 600)<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The course is\u00a0offered\u00a0through the Syracuse\u00a0University <a href=\"https:\/\/syr-sa.terradotta.com\/index.cfm?FuseAction=Programs.ViewProgram&amp;Program_ID=10434\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2018 summer abroad program<\/a>\u00a0and will be based in\u00a0Mexico City\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/4VA35REpE-Y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Roma neighborhood.<\/a>\u00a0It is a graduate and undergraduate, three-credit course that\u00a0will begin on May 17 and end on June 2, 2018.\u00a0This summer course is open to all majors; students from any college or university (non-Syracuse University students\u00a0may\u00a0enroll); and undergraduate, graduate, professional, and non-degree seeking students. Although there is no Spanish language requirement to take the course (as it will be taught in English), some Spanish language skills will help.<\/p>\n<p>Using M\u00e9xico as our site of\u00a0study, we will learn how M\u00e9xico&#8217;s history, culture, and political system has been affected by global migration. We will visit places that will help us examine how notions of citizenship, race, ethnicity, religion, labor, and education are shaped by globalization and transnationalism.\u00a0We will\u00a0learn\u00a0how people\u00a0move between communities, states, and countries and how these people reshape the places they live in.<\/p>\n<p>In Mexico\u00a0City, we will visit numerous sites and meet with multiple organizations. In general, we will learn about the ways\u00a0migration, global policies relating to human mobility, and local economies affect people who migrate. For example, we will visit\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.museofridakahlo.org.mx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">La Casa Azul<\/a> (Frida Kahlo&#8217;s House), take a public art tour organized by <a href=\"http:\/\/streetartchilango.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Street Art Chilango<\/a>, take a day trip to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/en\/list\/414\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Teotihuac\u00e1n<\/a>, and work with the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdmigrante.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Centro de los Derechos del Migrante<\/a>\u00a0(M\u00e9xico&#8217;s first transnational migrant workers&#8217; rights organization).\u00a0Although we will be based in Mexico City for most of our stay in M\u00e9xico, we will also travel to\u00a0the states\u00a0of\u00a0Hidalgo and Yucat\u00e1n.<\/p>\n<p>In the State of Hidalgo, we will\u00a0travel to an ecotourist site called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecoalberto.com.mx\/web\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EcoAlberto<\/a> to participate in a night hike\u00a0that simulates the experience of undocumented immigrants who cross the M\u00e9xico-USA border. The night hike, better known as\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/places\/parque-ecoalberto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">la caminata nocturna<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0was\u00a0created more than fifteen years ago by the H\u00f1\u00e4h\u00f1u natives (Otomi) of El Alberto, Hidalgo. The H\u00f1\u00e4h\u00f1u have garnered international media attention for\u00a0their efforts to showcase the experiences of undocumented immigrants.<\/p>\n<p>In the State of Yucat\u00e1n, we will stay in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/norawalsh\/2017\/11\/16\/a-guide-to-merida-mexico-10-reasons-to-visit-now\/#3215953379a4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">City of M\u00e9rida<\/a> and meet with members\u00a0of the Confucius Institute\u00a0at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uady.mx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Universidad Aut\u00f3noma de Yucat\u00e1n<\/a> (UADY) to discuss the way Chinese migration has affected the Yucat\u00e1n Peninsula, and M\u00e9xico more broadly. We will also visit\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/en\/list\/483\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chich\u00e9n Itz\u00e1<\/a>, among other cultural sites in the City of M\u00e9rida.<\/p>\n<p>As a whole, the sites\u00a0we will visit and organizations we meet with will address\u00a0global migration and transnational identities.\u00a0For a more robust listing of sites we will visit, read\u00a0the <a href=\"https:\/\/mrperez.expressions.syr.edu\/mexico\/itinerary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">itinerary<\/a>\u00a0section\u00a0of this website.<\/p>\n<p>The application deadline to be considered for this course is\u00a0February 20, 2018.
